What the shop can actually do
Capabilities, not equipment. What matters to a commission is the tolerance that can be held, the materials that can be worked, and whether the person doing it has done it before.

Woodworking
A full traditional bench alongside modern joinery methods. Most pieces start in red oak for its strength and open grain, then take inlay in contrasting exotic hardwoods — the seam between the two is usually the point of the piece.

Additive manufacturing
Parts are modelled from scratch for the job — enclosures, jigs, fixtures, and geometry that cannot be cut on a bench. Material is chosen against the actual load case rather than whatever is loaded.
- PLA — prototyping and display parts
- PETG and PET — durable, mildly flexible, food-adjacent
- TPU — gaskets, grips, flexible mounts
- Carbon-fibre reinforced — stiff, dimensionally stable
- ABS and ASA — heat and UV resistant
- Bespoke print-file authoring and iteration

Laser work
Used for the parts a blade cannot reach — fine surface detail, inlay pockets that fit on the first try, serialisation, and clean cuts in thin stock.

Small-scale metalwork
Fittings, hardware, inlay stock, and standalone objects. Scale is deliberately small — this is bench metalwork, not a fabrication shop.

Glass and leather
Glass for enclosures, panels, and light; leather for surfaces, straps, and wear parts. Both take engraving, and both age in a way that improves a piece.

Technology integration
Electronics, power, and timekeeping built into objects that still read as handmade. Custom PCBs, wireless connectivity, and network time sync live inside hardwood and metal bodies — the technology is meant to disappear into the piece rather than announce itself.

Working together
How a commission runs
Every piece starts with a conversation about what it has to do and where it has to live. Design follows from that, not from a catalogue.
Conversation
What it is for, where it goes, what it has to survive. Constraints first — they determine everything downstream.
Design
Drawings and, where it helps, a printed mock-up so the proportions can be judged in the hand rather than on a screen.
Build
Material selected against the design. Progress photographs as it comes together, so nothing is a surprise at the end.
Finish
Finishing, fitting, and any integrated electronics tested under load before it leaves the bench.
